CERN Library Opens Its Book Catalog To The World

February 6, 2010

Keywords: Open Data, CERN Library, RDF, Open Library Project

A book gets cataloged repeatedly in different silos such as libraries and databases today. Wouldn’t it be interesting to have a single web page containing all the book’s information for you to be able to pull the information wherever and whenever you want?  Look at CERN, a scientific library supporting this mission by releasing all its bibliographic library data to the world through open access. This encourages sharing and reuse of bibliographic data, a thought which David discusses in detail in his book Pull. CERN is also wants to provide their data in RDF formats along the footsteps of the Semantic Web. We salute CERN and we strongly urge all the libraries to open their data to the world, enabling the public to share, reuse, contribute and build mash-ups  services. Read the announcement at librarytechnology.org and access the open data itself at gs-service-bookdata.web.cern.ch
